Why is Oklahoma City considering erecting a monument to Satan?

Yes, that’s right. A New York-based Satanic Temple has put forward a proposal for a statue of Satan outside Oklahoma’s Statehouse. In the form of 7-foot-tall goat-headed demon Baphomet, flanked by smiling children.
This is the fall-out from a Christian organisation erecting a monument to the 10 Commandments last year. That opened the door to accusations of favouritism and any amount of trolling by other religious groups.
BTW: We were looking for pictures of the 10 Commandments monument and stumbled on the fact that there are loads of these, practically identical things, dotted around US public squares. Does that mean we’re going to see lots of Satans popping up?

Our favourite quote in this, from Satanic spokesperson Lucian Greaves:
The statue will serve as a beacon calling for compassion and empathy among all living creatures. The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation.”
That’s some good trolling – part of which is targeted at PETA, which also wants to erect a monument, calling for “compassion and understanding for all” and telling people not to eat meat.
Other groups also trying to get in on the monument action:
A Hindu group asked to put up a state of Hanuman
Here’s a statue of Hanuman from New Delhi – pretty rad.
Pastafarians want a monument to the Flying Spaghetti Monster
They actually managed to get this one up outside a courthouse in Tennessee. Briefly. Fair play to them for that.
Let’s just look at that Satanic monument again
Haha, okay. Yes. Gosh.
The Temple is crowd-funding its statue-building and claims to be halfway to its $20,000 target. However, there’s a moratorium on considering planning requests until the legality of the 10 Commandments monument is finally settled.
